First you might be asking what a render is.

It's not the official definition, but to me a render is any image that you can use to create another image. For example:

First, let me compare these two images.

• All parts of the Yami image are inside the borders of the image. The Jaden image has part of the foot missing. When you are searching for renders, it is important that you find images that fit most of the render or the parts you want (at least) inside of the borders. There is an exception to this though. If you look at my Red Dragon Archfiend sig below that I gave to Roxas94, you'll notice that this is the image from the card. If you can take a portion of the image and crop it like that, this will work too.
  
  
• Another difference between these two images is the backgrounds. Yami has a completely white background. While Jaden has a complex background.

Now let me explain how to remove their backgrounds so that you can create your own. There are a two main tools you want to consider when cropping out your characters. The first is the Magic Wand Tool and the second is the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

1. Before you do anything, crop out the portion of the image you are going to include in the signature. Remember, photoshop does a good job of stretching images so if you have to stretch the cropped image just a little don't worry about quality.
   
2. Use one of the tools I mentioned above to select and delete the background. If you're not sure how to use the tools, you can check out this tutorial. I recommend practicing with them first.
   
3. If after removing the background you do not see a checkerboard background, right click on the layer in the layers palette and click "Layer from background...". Then delete the background again. You want the background to be transparent, but if you're in the background layer it won't happen. If there are two layers in the layers pallet (a background layer and the image's layer), then delete the background layer.
   
4. Now save your render in .psd format so you can use it again later. I will explain how to use them in another tutorial.

This is what your render should look like before and after removing the background:
(Don't worry if it's not perfect, often times the editing will either take care of it or make it look better.)

I know you got it, but I didn't lasso this image because all I wanted was the white background. The Magic Wand tool will select it for me easily so I can delete it in seconds not minutes.

It's just that the Magic Wand tool does not always work so well. If you have a more complex background or the background matches the edges of the image then it might try to select the image too.

Once the background is deleted and now transparent, you can transfer it to another background with drag and drop.

Practice makes perfect.

well i use photoshop CS4 Portable, instead of me dragging and dropping i can just click on file, then u click place. Don't forget to visit my new workshop!

Yeah, I can do it that way too, but I think it's easier to cut out the background and then drag and drop the character onto the new background. That way I can save the character by itself for later use.

Okay, here's a crazy fast way to find a ton of good renders. Today alone I managed to find almost a hundred good renders I can use.

1. Go to https://www.photobucket.com/.
   
2. Search "renders value" replacing value with the name of what you're looking to find a render of. If it doesn't matter to you, just use "renders".

For example, do a search "renders bleach". You'll get (or at least I got) around 150 quality renders from the Bleach anime.
